gcc and especially emacs suffered from stallman exerting strong control over what they are, against the wishes of their communities. emacs specifically spent so many years as just an editor with an intentionally weak programming language attached, when its community really wanted a capable language environment that does good editing. stallman had to have control wrestled away from him before emacs could get truly good.
an LLM is a force multiplier for someone like that, and not at all in a good way. someone like stallman can go back to the days when it was “just him” (and a pile of unacknowledged contributors, now scrubbed by the plagiarism machine) and implement a ton of regressive shit nobody wants
