Perhaps language has just moved on but, to me, a "staycation" means "staying at home", not "going on holiday somewhere".
@neil yes this annoys me considerably as somebody who normally hires a holiday cottage in the UK rather then going abroad.
@neil Absolutely agree. I think its usage changed around covid time. To be fair, it's a rubbish play on words anyway, since we don't generally use the word vacation. Maybe we need a new word for taking a break but not going away. I nominate 'holipad'.

If someone went _abroad_, they got to do a presentation to the rest of the class like they were in the Royal Geographical Society.
@neil Absolutely! An overnight stay as described is a domestic holiday rather than a foreign holiday.
@neil Eugh yes. I feel Covid was the tipping point for this.
I don't know who pushed the whole 'staycation = anywhere in England' but there was a definite vibe for it during the semi lockdown years.
When I were a lad we went on holiday and that meant the British coast.
@neil but if you disassociate hard enough, you can vacation anywhere in the world! Brazil, for instance.
