If you know about exponentiation (powers), you already know half the story. A logarithm is just a function to get the exponent given the base and the result.

@alexchapman In other words, 5 squared means your base is 5, your exponent is 2, and the result of that is 25. So if you have your result (25) and your exponent (2), you would use root to get the base (square root of 25 is 5). On the other hand, if you have your result (25) and your base (5) and you wanted the exponent, you would use a logarithm (logarithm of 25 in base 5 is 2).
@alexchapman Right. So when you say x to the power of y, x is your base and y is your exponent.
