This is not odd: they've got silly money to spend on silly things, and can justify gambling as a form of effective altruism because it unlocks new epistemic vistas when you've got "skin in the game" etc.
The funny bit is they wrote a clause in to specifically exclude AIs being counted as humans in macroeconomic statistics. Because, in their mind, that's a thing that might happen.
