Skimming SDFat's ExFat backend... The architecture is very similar. There must be differences, but glancing at the code said differences aren't very noticable.
And there's a backend which dispatches to one of the 2 others.
Then there's code shared between these backends, including abstractions around Arduino's stdlib, macros for when the file was compiled, a date type for attaching timestamps to FAT files, some debugging utils, fast reading/writing numbers (possibly via Assembly), ...

... various magic constants known by FAT, an C++ interface bridging over to the underlying block device, an in-memory cache wrapping such a block device, a place to register a callback to get the current time & some wrappers around it, parsing file names, formatting into human-legible units, various structs describing the datastructures in a FAT filesystem, UTF-16 encoding/decoding, more serialization utils, & conversion to uppercase.

Finally there's several superclasses representing streams of data, like files. With methods abstracting the stream to aid read/writing relatively trivial formats. And with or without in-memory buffering.
This approximates C's StdLib.
