For many autistic people, our difficulties begin at school 😨
At home, if we’re lucky enough to be in a gentle, loving environment, we can be ourselves - play for hours, explore freely, eat in ways that suit us, & choose the spaces that feel safe.

A quick detour into diagnosis:
Many children are diagnosed about a year into school, with another smaller wave after starting high school.
Autism is a neurotype - a natural human variation - but diagnosis still relies on behaviour, and sometimes self-report.

An autism diagnosis often seems to hinge on two things:
1. is the person annoying anyone?
2. are they struggling enough?
Often it’s more #1 for children, and more #2 for adults.
