I mean I've spent years living in Canada; there is no reason to do this. These folks *are* us - you ever been to Pennsylvania? Cause Canada is like the biggest Pennsylvania you ever seen. On one hand I am a little surprised *this* is the breaking point for some liberals, but on the other hand I probably shoulda predicted that because again, Canadians aren't foreign to us. They are definitely a DIFFERENT country, but they are close enough that we relate on almost every topic on a citizen level

Even their liberals are not materially different than machine politicians from say Massachusetts. American wars, conquests and blatant exercises of so called "soft power" have always been cloaked in some form of racism or "white man's burden" logic. We are fighting "them" because they are "backwards and primative" and no matter what we do to them it's "justified" because "they" would do worse to us and hate our freedom.
None of that flies when applied to Canada. I don't know how you sell this.
Manufacturing consent for war isn't just about convincing EVERYONE they want to fight a war. Part of it is marginalizing the dissenting opinion so hard, that people who otherwise might have qualms about your warmongering, are too worried about the social consequences of speaking out in FAVOR of the demonized "enemy" and if you do it well enough this creates a void that acts to prevent the uninformed from ever even asking the question "should we be fighting this war?"

@aud Depends. But the thing Americans don't understand about "soft power" is that it works because of the implied threat. If Trump is trying to take over Canada, that's an act of war whether we fire a shot or not. But yes, some of the more unhinged nazis are threatening actual annexation. Pretty sure Nancy Mace was on about it as recently as a couple weeks ago.
