Watching Wayne Brown in his capacity as Mayor of Auckland has been fascinating. The guy's an older right-wing bloke, but he's also an engineer, and it's made a startling difference. You can almost see him slipping leftwards against his own will because however right-wing he is, he's also tethered to reality in a way that so much of the right just isn't.

@iris_meredith my general impression of engineers is that they skew right. It seems like the ability to manipulate materials for profit generates an over-confidence in technological responses to predicaments caused by technology
