The lack of excitement I feel about web dev and being part of the community right now is unpleasant.

@matuzo I am working on a whole new course about the web for our students, and I really like it. It’s about creativity, it’s also about professionalism, and it’s about CSS, a wonderful creative material. And you might call it naive as well, but without naiveté there’s no way to not get depressed.

Does it make a difference that the web dev community (at least the sweet and nice people here) does value your presence and work?
@matuzo 💚 Same here in a way. Less regarding the community (🫶), but more a feeling of “why are so many people so quiet these days and does it even make sense to put your stuff out there and contribute to a web full of AI slop, dominated by big tech? And does anyone care anyway?”
@matuzo To be honest I'm in quite a good place right now (but I never was a big community person).
For me the big community feeling died together with #JSConfEu and I'm now quite happy on my own.
Nowadays I'm mostly sticking to native #javascript wherever I can because I love to keep it simple.
I'm too tired to surf the latest #webdev wave every few months and this is fine. Maybe it's time now to sit on the beach watching the young devs struggling with their strange AI setup and just chill a little!?
@matuzo I hear you. Been doing mostly backend work for the past 2 years since the acquisition. I go to our local meet ups, I talk to the kids, I see them getting excited about slop and I find it difficult. So I give a talk every couple of months but it’s hard not to feel like an “old man yelling at clouds”.
@matuzo same. And I feel, I may be part of the problem, because all those buzz makes me tired and annoyed, so I stop writing about the cool stuff too. I guess I am not alone with that, so the loud guys become louder and louder and the other stuff is silently vanishing into the void. Maybe "we" should try to be more present somehow…

@bastianallgeier @adactio @matuzo We could set up in a remote mountain village in Japan and practice HTML katas in the snow while our neighbours hand-forge bonsai shears. I'd be interested.
@matuzo I'm sad to hear that, but my own excitement is probably at its lowest it has ever been, too. Is it because of AI? I'm personally fed up with the fact that nobody talks about anything interesting anymore, just AI.
