I always underestimate what size drill bits I need for hanging anything on the wall. Today it took 7 tries to get the correct size. I don’t mind though. The reverse would be a disaster

@farah If you hold a wood drill bit up next to a wood screw, the bit wants to be somewhat smaller than the threads but not as small as the shank. I was a cabinetmaker and I still don't know any more precise rule of thumb for this.
a trick from wood working (but it works other places). Put the drill bit in front of the screw and hold it up. If you can only see the threads of the screw but not the screw shaft, it's the right size.
