Ever notice that some people seem to turn off their car at a stoplight, then start it again when it's time to move?
I thought it was a manual thing, like a superstition. I also suspected it was a waste of gas; that the car wasted more gas starting up versus just idling for a short time.
Turns out I was wrong. Not only can it save around 7-26% in gas, it's an actual feature built into modern cars.

Every IC car I've rented in the last few years has done that…
@schwa We had a 2006 Toyota Matrix for 15 years, so I was out of the game for quite a while. We have a hybrid Tucson now, so its gas engine behavior still throws me off sometimes.
@chartier I used to travel for work and the first time I encountered this many years ago was on a rental and I had a gods damn heart attack thinking the car was broken 10' from the lot. 😅
It is a cool feature *once you know what is happening*.
@lyonsinbeta We've had a hybrid since late 2021 and I'm still not quite used to when the engine shuts off at random.
@chartier cost me a lot more than you might expect recently to replace the battery in my 2016 passat due to the startstop requirements. So at least 10 year old tech, possibly more.
