We aren't even 2 years into this administration and there's been little resistance to it. Now we are at a point where the tech overlords have established a surveillance network to keep such resistance at bay. The implied threat of being watched, receiving a knock at the door or even being abducted has put a chill upon journalists and anyone set out to question or challenge the current establishment.
@MichaelBishop Actually, I think public sentiment has reached a tipping point. The key signal is that pushback against things like Flock and Data Centers has become bipartisan, without rural/urban differentiation. This is crucial.

Every time the Billionaire Big Tech CEOs open their mouths or Trump proclaims how much he loves data centers they're like the Coyote running off the cliff. Right now they're pretty much suspended in the air, like he so often was. But we all know what happens next. The big unknown is the timing.
You might be correct about the Flock and data centers. Surprisingly we have a state representative here in Idaho who's pushing hard against the data centers. Living in Idaho, the reddest state full of white supremacists, likely skews my impression of what's happening.
@MichaelBishop Data centers have become particularly hated in rural areas (though the hate is everywhere now). Given the typical political skew in most rural areas, this is creating a very unusual and I think perhaps unprecedented political situation. I've never seen anything like it before, and it's happening at warp speed.
