They keep thinking they need to strengthen surveillance. It makes me think they are silently hoping they'll have enough power someday to enable each actual authoritarian to rule every country with that power.

I feel the best question to ask regarding surveillance is, what would Hitler do with that power?

And then say, would you want leaders you cannot trust to have such power?

And how do you know one won't come to power?

I found these thoughts on a website and I now push them as my ideal as well.

@eff All storage of data is subject to corruption and hacking. Only way to be safe is to not gather the data to begin with.

@eff government is bad but this is worse. They are for-profit companies without the same protections that *should* be afforded to the citizens by the government. For-profit companies selling data to a government that uses that fact as a loophole to hoover up data it should otherwise not be privy to. The for-profit companies are encouraged to erode our right and need of privacy in search of the holy dollar. The means will justify the end every time when the end is profit.
