For the last couple of months, my problem I've always had with sleep/wake on this laptop has been joined with a second problem, where sometimes the screen will flicker violently for bursts of 3 to 4 seconds, in clusters of up to 20 seconds at a time.
My experience with Linux has become noticeably worse since the kernel started accepting slop commits. I don't have a way to know if my experience has got worse *because* the kernel started accepting slop commits. I only know it's gotten worse.
@mcc I think some of it was the big 7.0 leap that kinda got people a bit too eager to ship patch sets which were not as well tested. Major versions are just a vibe for Linux but it was still a milestone in too many people's heads so they rushed and I think we're still seeing shocks from that in addition to AI taking all the attention away (be it vibe coding or all the effort to look at bug/vuln reports). I expect things to get better for a short period and then sharply worse.
@cararemixed I literally don't know what it is LKML wants out of a kernel. The kernel was fine last year. The kernel seemed fine ten years ago. The problem with Linux was never the kernel. All I really want out of the core OS is Vulkan support and market-competitive latencies on audio and MIDI routing
@mcc @cararemixed Kernel development is entirely captured by a bunch of niche interests irrelevant to ordinary desktop, laptop, mobile, media center, gaming, soho server, hosted webserver, etc. usage. Stuff like HPC, NUMA, Google-scale shit, etc. And the generality needed for that makes things worse and less secure and stable for everyone else.
HPC admin here, the kernel is shit for us too. It's entirely hyperscaler container hosting

@khm @dalias @cararemixed Really curious about the value of a fork from last year, or even the day before copilot went live. I sincerely do not believe meaningful value could have been added since then.
@mcc @khm @cararemixed I would very much recommend using a 6.x LTS kernel for the forseeable future. This may work for riding out the vibesickness until the bubble pops and the money to pay the kernel folks to be AI propagandists dries up.

ah I can help here: you use nix if want to get rich drone-striking orphanages and you use guix if you have strong opinions regarding the copyright status of your video card firmware
