@siracusa Please. Just get an MBP with an M5 Pro as a “Desktop Laptop™”.
You.
Don’t.
Need.
More!
@siracusa imagine the Mac Pro was still around in this era. We’d need to take out a mortgage.
@siracusa ”with a heavy heart” part 2 episode incoming?
@siracusa m5 max will be a beast for the entry level. 36gb/1tb is £2700, same price as before. 64/1tb is £3700, steep but also same. Good prices IMO.
@siracusa I’m predicting you’re gonna go with base M5 ultra (which comes with 96gb memory to match your Mac Pro) and 8tb storage and you’ll do it on a monthly lease (which we U.K. citizens don’t get sadly) which comes in at a $184.55 on Apple Upgrade
@siracusa Don’t worry, John - I am sure that as you paid absolutely through the nose for that Mac Pro, Apple will give you top dollar on the trade in.
😂
@siracusa not gonna lie you are the first person I thought of
@siracusa Now we know why they started offering leases.
@siracusa My question for the show is, the killer on your personal specs seems to be the price of storage, not GPU core count or even RAM. Does any of this have you reconsidering some kind of NAS or external storage?
@Eric_Neue My NAS is also full…
@siracusa Wow. 😉 😆 Looks like you'll need to wait until late October though.
@siracusa Ouch so the previous price increase was just to add a slight cushion to the actual price increase 😱
@siracusa
Oh, has the new decade commenced, indeed?
@siracusa The M4 iMac i put in my recording studio is more power than i'll ever need for a goddamn decade and a half. 10 cores, 32GB of RAM, purchased before Trump's tariffs in 2024. The Intel i5 iMac I had in there prior worked fine until the new OSs broke it.
You don't need this, just air gap your shit and freeze it in time. The only updates to creative software like video editors, graphic design, audio workstations, etc. Is AI bloat that doesn't functionally improve UX.
@siracusa I learned recently that “Ultra” was the name for the Allied code breaking operation at Bletchley Park where the first electronic computer was developed during WWII. There is something nice about Apple using the term Ultra for its best chips (and best laptop??), albeit surely coincidental.
