@codinghorror @jerry When I joined PagerDuty in 2015, that was an official rule explained as part of everyone’s on-boarding. In those days, the company prided itself on giving people autonomy to do the right thing, and the point of the rule was to remind us that the way to retain personal autonomy was to use it wisely.
@codinghorror @jerry I've heard that comment about HR manuals. Every rule exists because someone caused it.
Which was why there was a "No sleeping overnight in the office" rule at my last place.
@codinghorror @jerry, if you want perspective, there's this nice cubicle on Frogstar World B which shows you everything.
Highly recommended! Would visit again, but with my own transport.

@codinghorror but this is only happening now because other instances were publicly threatening to defederate right?
@wheresalice @codinghorror yeah, "be kind" meant don't call out the racists
@codinghorror @jerry It's always interesting to think on how limits (as well as permissions) may cross their own borders.
Let's suppose I cite a very despicable person, enlisting all the reasons for which they should be disliked. Will it become "hate speech"? Or it won't, simply because my words are shared by "the good ones"?
All of this is just a reflection on how we can stay rational, respectful, but still express disapproval, or strong opinions.
the rule "Do not be the reason we need to add a new rule" was a new rule they needed to add where someone was the reason
Love your work @jerry
@codinghorror @jerry I end most of my driver's briefings at race meetings with "...and don't be the reason we have to write a new rule" so 💯 this. And firmly agree with the rules for the site
@codinghorror @jerry Is this related to some other servers like mastodon.art getting so fed up with racism problems spilling over from infosec.exchange that they announced they'd be defederating it? Because it would be nice if that could be averted.
