I had a fairly sophisticated recording studio setup in my apartment when I was in my twenties, and I'm looking into getting the tapes digitized before they disintegrate. I have mixed feelings about the music now, but I'd regret not saving it. The tapes will probably have to be "baked" (look it up).

...A friend of mine found the tapes in an out-of-the-way closet in my mom's house just before we sold the place a few years ago. I'd been thinking they were lost forever.
@dmandl Keeping in mind that baking is a one-shot process, I strongly urge letting a professional shop do this and the digitizing if possible. Baking isn't ALWAYS necessary, I have old reel-to-reel tapes that are still fine, but there are a ton of variables of course.
@lauren Oh yeah, I've got someone who's a real pro doing this. No way would I attempt it myself. I once watched him bake some old Jimi Hendrix multitrack tapes. Then we listened to them!
