@paninid counterpoint: going back to the founding, *every administration* has picked and chosen which laws to enforce (and against whom). Trump is just being more obvious about it and targeting more people who aren't seen as fair targets by a majority of journalists. This is literally what every district attorney's job is, as well as the job of the attorney general. Police of course get a big say in terms of what evidence gets collected and how time is spent on which reports too.

What more people need to realize as a result of our current travesties of justice, many of which the supreme court is blessing: America does not now and has never had a system that meaningfully delivers "justice" in a colloquial sense. It has a "punishment and oppression system" that works to keep women, queers, the poor, non-whites, disabled people, and other marginalized groups in their places, while delivering a veneer of fairness just thick enough to prevent revolution (or not quite in cases like George Floyd).

Why does the system still almost never deliver real consequences to killer cops?

Why are white nationalist gangs allowed to persist within sheriff's departments?

How often have religious freedom laws been enforced in favor of indigenous tribes rights to access to and protection for their sacred spaces? Yet at the same time we have the Ten Commandments on mandatory display at schools in Texas?

Why indeed are none of the rich Epstein files rapists even being investigated, despite the fact that the "justice" department knows their names?

This is not a system that aliens discovering our planet would believe has any connection to the word "justice", other than via its incessant portrayals in (often state-sponsored) media.
