The dehumidifier arrived and so far I am... questioning things.

My Inkbird temperature/humidity sensor is reporting no change in humidity, but a much smaller drop in temperature in the room than expected (I had to turn the heater off to have an outlet for the dehumidifier to plug into). I have no idea how it measures humidity either, need to look up the model and see if I can get some clarification.

The room definitely feels drier, but I'm not sure I'm much good at gauging that myself since it took me a while to realise that this house traps humidity all over (not just in the bathroom) and that's why it often feels disproportionately cold but then I also end up sweating easily.

Oh, the unit also hasn't even managed to pull enough water for it to be visible in the tank, after running for about 4 hours. So... IDK. Maybe these things just don't work the way I think they do.

@dartigen what kind of dehumidifier ? If it’s not visibly collecting water, it’s not making a difference.

@s0 It's a powered one by Anko, it's supposed to be good for rooms of up to 25m2 (which the office is well under). Not sure what technology it uses specifically.

I have a feeling I was just being impatient, because there's definitely water in the tray - not much, but it's there. The office was only reading about 60%, so there might not have been enough water in the air to draw it out much faster.

@dartigen oh yeah no sorry you got sorta-scammed.
That's a Peltier module dehumidifier. It's the only type that is sub-$300, but also very inefficient and ineffective.
That doesn't remotely have the capacity to meaningfully dehumidify 25 square metres if there's any kind of opening. It might do ok to bring a small room down from very high humidity to just high... but using more power for less effect.

@dartigen compressor dehumidifiers (basically a reverse cycle dryer or a portable aircon in different clothes) and desiccant dehumidifiers (what if silica gel cycled itself) are the two properly effective types, and are each suitable in different environments.

Desiccant type is good in low temp, high humidity -- less water overall but harder to pull out by thermal gradient.
Compressor type is good in high temp, high humidity -- it can remove many litres per day, but has a minimum effective ambient temperature.

In other news, I really want another steam cleaner attachment, but I'm willing to bet that it either doesn't exist or doesn't exist for the one I have.

I literally just want a smaller version of the floor mop head, that can attach to the flexible extension hose, so I can go over vertical surfaces too and also clean up the grungy water as I go.
