An otherwise blank text message requiring a download from a number I don't recognize gets one response from me. I report it as spam and block the number.

A maliciously crafted MMS message can potentially infect a phone. Automatic downloads should always be disabled (as is the case on your phone, apparently).
Ditto with spam phone calls that leave a text that says, "Dial 9 if you want these to stop." LOL.
I have no clue what dialing 9 would do, but since I voluntarily did it, I'm on the hook for it, at least in the interim. I'll never dial 9 unless I know and have done business with the caller.
