I was not implying that you were duped so much as there appears to be a great deal of effort going on to dupe you, to dupe all of us really - both American and Canadian media are more or less uniformly pretending these are legitimate trade negotiations, even the ones that appear to be criticizing Trump for being bad at making deals. I look at the information I have, what the US government has reportedly demanded and what becomes immediately clear to me is that we are simply not negotiating a trade deal. The US demands look like the kinda "trade deals" the British Empire used to impose on countries they just bombarded into surrender - it's colonialism. And lemme just say Trump ain't exactly beating the Hitler rap because Hitler's plan for Eastern Europe was in effect, colonialism. This is all unhinged violence but in suits.
But I'm not really seeing that angle much in the mainstream discourse. And where I do see it, there's a lot of careful steering to make it clear that calling this an act of war was a metaphor. But I don't think it was. And even more so, I dunno that Carney would agree with you either. I watched his statement and I think the man was saying what he means and just isn't the kinda guy who uses war as a metaphor. The trade deal is the annexation - same script, different acts.
Now, maybe I'm not a billionaire nazi hopped up on ketamine, but I'm the sharpest hunk of rock my village has ever seen and from my perspective it seems really weird that we're talking about what seems to be an act of war, albeit in slow motion, towards an ally no less, in the "Business" section of the paper like it's about actualized costs as a result of tariff rates on softwood lumber.
That seems, off somehow.
