I keep finding myself wondering… now that it’s becoming clear that most people are going to be priced out of regular electronic device upgrades for years, and the ones that do exist are likely to be much more RAM-constrained then before, are apps/websites going to have to be much more well-optimized than they have been for the past decade or so?
@misty we can hope.
@misty https://www.DownloadMoreRAM.com has been waiting for this moment to shine.
@misty I suspect so, but also not sure if it will break out of the FLOSS sphere. I can definitely see frameworks like Electron becoming less popular (or, alternately, much more optimized), for example, but I’m not sure that MS has the same incentives since they’re doubling down on SaaS.
Apple will be an interesting one to watch, since their CPU development was also partly driven by power optimization. I can see them moving into an optimization direction.
@jmelesky Yeah, given Apple launched the 8GB MacBook Neo recently, it feels like performance on low-RAM devices is already a priority for them. They may be slightly ahead of the curve.
@misty i doubt it, isn't much of the hardware used by employees of major web companies subsidized by the companies anyways? they won't have to feel the impact as much
@esm That’s true so long as there’s no economic pressure on companies for their sites/apps to perform well, but a much wider percentage of the population not being able to upgrade might finally start applying that pressure. Like when people felt the pressure to make their sites work well on cell phones when they first launched
@esm We’ll see, I guess. I’m not totally optimistic but I feel like we’re at an inflection point of some kind.
@misty The point is to force reliance on AI. It's the latest evolution of "software as a service." The serfs won't be allowed to own anything, only to rent from the masters.
@misty I've had this thought too, but I think they won't, and everything is just going to suck more to use. This will especially be the case as more devs are giving up their autonomy to LLMs.
@misty yup. Already preparing for it.
@misty lmao, we can only hope, right?
@swiftyshq Yeah, hopefully? Haha
