Grrrr - bewilderment, anger, fear regarding the scanning & destroying of books by AI companies; I totally get that.
But putting it in the same category as the Nazi book burnings of the 1930s and the Taliban destroying the Buddhas of Bamiyan 1998/2001, this is just using shock tactics and simply wrong.
One is an act of unchecked capitalist/extractive action; the other an act of attempted conscious extermination.
Such comparisons trivialize the atrocities, which is why I'm so opposed to them.
@lavaeolus I agree these are very different things. The book scanning deserves a category in its own right, as it’s part of an effort to create automatic digital twins of the authors that then exploit their work or mimic, impersonate, replace it with the effect of destroying the authors’ livelihood. It’s “slo-mo economic vanishing of authors with the help of an automated impersonator”.
