Sometimes there *is* a simple answer:
Born in Bradford discovered that a third of pupils diagnosed with poor eyesight in Bradford didn't get to the opticians; the resulting new policy of providing glasses to those pupils through their schools has halved (in less than a decade) the literacy gap in Bradford schools, suggesting sometimes its just not being to see the page that is the problem.
This looks like it would be an easy national literacy win!
@ChrisMayLA6 my mum got glasses age 8, suddenly could see.
We were tested routinely because of mum's history. I was still picked up at secondary school testing, borderline but they didn't send a letter. I told mum myself and mum got me tested. Because I'm deaf, our optometrist prescribed glasses when she might otherwise have waited.
Mum complained to school for not officially flagging it, either school tester didn't know I'm deaf = fail, or knew and didn't flag = fail. School apologised.
@ChrisMayLA6 my partner's colourblindneas was only verbally flagged age 6. Her parents 'forgot' so when she had pre driving licence eye tests, her mum was all surprised and denied ever being told by partner when she was a kid. School/tester should have written a letter properly. And it should be discussed between school and parents so it's definitely been understood and where relevant, acted on.
