Today I'm furious. Heavily furious. No, it's not the victim tone but the angry tone.

I escaped from Facebook and X because of far-right, and on Fediverse I have to argue with far-left.

AI is a big problem for water, climate, agriculture, ethics, copyright, the list of negative impacts is long and the discussion is long enough as well.

I just replied to a thread where a person said "I won't read anything where an image is AI-generated". Right, AI slop is polluting the web more and more. But I posed the question: an AI generated image could also be used by a blind podcaster using Castopod, not giving so much importance on visual for obvious reasons, investing every energy on written and audio creation - castopod asks for a mandatory cover image for standard podcast rss, no 1400x1400 picture, no podcast publishing. So, it's a barrier; AI could just create the title [welcome to john doe podcast] and that's all.

I think most sighted people live in a privileged world where they find a community holding out their hand anytime; I don't talk for other blind folks but I'm not that lucky.

That person compared me basically to a murderer "one murder is not less tolerable than a dozen murders. Ai drains lakes, etc etc etc"...

I wonder why those assholes take me as an example of person to make feel guilty, and do not talk to all those billionaires who are truly damaging the world. Humiliating a blind person is easier maybe, but I am not the one letting others humiliate me.

I can understand all discussions, but if you want to make me feel guilty, at least offer yourself. Not saying "find sighted help by yourself", if you really care of me not using AI-based assistive tech, at least propose: "you could ask me, let us keep in touch, I will do my best to give you my feedback". Then it's up to me to say yes please, or no thanks.
But if you just compare me to a murderer and nature destructor, well, my only answer is "you destroy Earth just pissing, shitting, breathing. Please leave this world, go to Mars by feet".

@elettrona To me it's a good reminder that there's an authoritarian left (CCP, USSR, etc.) just like there's the authoritarian right (MAGA, Nazis, etc.).

They don't think people should have the freedom of speech to say LLMs could have a valid use.

Just like in Russia they don't think anybody should be allowed to criticize Putin. Or that you shouldn't be allowed to say Taiwan exists in China.

Evidence doesn't matter to them, only their preconceived dogmatic beliefs.

@LouisR85 Extreme theories, inside and outside politics, are a clear sign of fear or, at least, discomfort.
We can't deny that tech in general is developing too fast. Definitely too fast; and AI has a very relevant impact for the world in general, maybe the universe, and humanity. We can't hide or deny this.
I'm the first to say that AI should be used with rationality. Opening a blog and generating the whole content automatically, it's not the way to go. But if it is used to assist someone in need, it's a positive impact!
I would like people to discuss in a more civil manner, because if AI can give interesting help to assist someone, vulnerable people (like blind, deaf, elder people) can run the risk of depending on this stuff when it becomes more expensive, not to talk about prejudices and manipulation it can get. We can stay on guard, before bullying people for the sake of nothing.

@elettrona I do worry that meta will one day make the use of their smart glasses expensive and it'll be yet another way people rip off those who need accessibility.

That's why I'm positive about local LLM servers which could be used.

The privacy benefits are huge too. Imagine if someone gets hit in their privates and simply asks meta to see if there's any bruising, etc. They shouldn't be banned for something like that, or have to send it to meta. Just as an example.
