5/ It took me a little bit to get used to a tiling window manager, but I quite like it and much prefer it compared to a regular desktop environment.

I even installed a terminal based music player (I was surprised to see so many) so I can stream music from my self hosted navidrome instance.

What I like about this Linux experience is that I can customize the environment to my liking. The sword cuts both ways though, and I have to maintain and fix things when they break.

6/ What really started me down this path was Apple's ever increasing stranglehold on developers and their customers.

Tim Cook handing Trump a trophy in exchange for tariff exemption ended up being my final straw.

I've been an Apple customer for the better part of 25 years and I decided that 2026 was going to be the year that I started moving away from big tech.

7/ So yes, buying a thinkpad isn't as sexy as a macbook. The laptop can be a bit creaky, and the speakers are terrible compared to my M! MAX Macbookpro.

That being said, I do like having USB-C and USB-A, with HDMI and ethernet all without needing expensive dongles. The keyboard is miles better than my macbookpro

I like that I can tweak the operating system to look how I want. I like that I can experiment freely without needing permission.

8/8 This laptop is like an appliance. It does nothing until I decide to do something with it. There is now a sense of ownership over this machine that I simply do not have with my apple devices.

I can swap out the keyboard, nvme drive, upgrade the RAM, change the display that has better color rendition. ALL WITHOUT VOIDING A WARRANTY.

Ultimately this comes down to me taking definitive control over my computing experience and data and away from these greedy corporations

I buy used dell stuff for my Linux needs via dellrefurbished.com

Latitudes for laptops and optiplexes for desktops. Occasionally I'll buy a precision

Since those are business class they tend to be more serviceable and better quality.

Also, dell is our vendor of choice at work and I know them very well.

Framework under fire for Omarchy/DHH/Hyprland support?

You might’ve noticed Framework, the laptop manufacturer, embroiled in a controversy as of now. The Discord server is on lockdown because the volunteer moderation team has gone on hiatus, and the Framework forum post about the controversy has been gaining unsightly amounts of steam from people disappointed at actions taken by Framework.
