OMFG. I can't have a fucking driving license because of my fucking mother now too.

She put a name that was never my legal name on my fist license so I can't prove it was legally changed because it never was, and apparently that's more important to them than my birthday certificate and passport.
Which also means I now have to delay uni by a year at least to get this fixed because there's no way they will fix it before the deadline.

I'm gonna risk sending it back with a letter that says basically "you should never have allowed my abusive mother to put that name on my license because it was never my legal name, as evidenced by my birth certificate and passport. Send me my damn driving license with the right name."

This is exhausting and ridiculous.

@alexisbushnell would a deed poll renouncing the name that was never yours help? I've helped folk come up with some careful non-standard wording that satisfied the passport office for not-dissimilar fuckery in the past...

@me_and I don't know. But I have a deed poll that changes my name from my actual previous legal name to my current one.

I'm hoping that the fact they should never have allowed me to have a license in that name given there was no ID to support it and my birth certificate & passport are in my actual legal name will push them to fix it.

@alexisbushnell is this more hostile environment? I don't recall ever having to prove who I was when I got my first driver's license, though that was back in the day when it was a piece of paper that was supposed to last 60 odd years

Bureaucracy is such a pain. I hope you sort this quickly. We've had similar-ish issues in the past because our surname is often misspelt. Had proper run-ins with the tax office chasing me for tax because the name they had registered was wrong. Wife had to spend an hour on the phone to the council to clear up being unable to register to vote because they'd entered her name wrong somewhere and wanted her to guess what the wrong name might have been in order to change it.
