I'm not sure that's fair. AFAIK the ongoing salary is for continuing dev work behind the scenes, while others lead the org. As for shady, if he'd taken Venture Capital he could have made many times the salary he's received as BDFL of a donation-funded project.
@strypey Getting back on that, yes, I'm aware it's not fully fair. And I'm a bit torn about it as Gargron has done quite a job on Mastodon - but then again, I also see a bunch of people in my environment who, even though totally short on money, decided to chip in a few $ to support Mastodon because they believe in the cause. From that perspective, providing the founder with a seven digit revenue has a difficult taste to it.

I'm also short on money. So I didn't give any to Mastodon Inc. But if I had, I would expect them to spend it as they see fit.

AFAIK the salary is not for being a "founder", but for ongoing technical work. Like the salary Torvalds gets as the maintainer of Linux.
@strypey Yeah, but even for ongoing technical work this is /quite/ a salary in this context. Again, I am by no means against him being paid for that - more the opposite; I think we need much more federated / FLOSS projects that actually are built in a sustainable manner, not as "spare time projects" built by people who earn a big salary elsewhere (worst case working for some proprietary vendor). I'm really just having an issue with this particular single amount as it seems to send a sign that might remind people of Big Tech much more than of an independent project to tackle Big Tech solutions.
(Still looking for a way to donate some $ to The Fediverse as a whole, and again and again learning that a lack of a proper way to do so is one main gripes with this.)

Arguably Dansup has overstretched himself (PixelFex, FediDB, Sup Messenger, Loops, etc), rather like Gargron was doing before the recent restructure. As a result, what gets work depends on what's itching at any given time.
