A beautiful day teaching coil basketry at Laughton Greenwood 's tenth anniversary celebration yesterday. This was surprisingly emotional for me, I was involved with getting this project set up ten years ago, taking minutes, organizing events, setting up websites and social media and then moving on to some hands on volunteering once the land was actually secured. It's incredible to see how far it's progressed in ten years.

#Laughton Greenwood near #Lewes and #Brighton is a lovely community owned woodland restoration project, currently looking for a community engagement officer to attract more people into the wood. And also to make Laughton Greenwood more welcoming and accessible to people who may not always feel that woodland, conservation or wellbeing activities are for them. Applications from people not traditionally represented in the outdoors/conservation sector welcome.
8hrs a week, £20 an hour, 12 month project.

It's a brilliant project, I've done a fair bit of volunteering with them over the years (see post above). It's actually where my profile picture was taken. So you too could get a nice picture of yourself and stick it on Mastodon forgetting you're brandishing an axe in it then get surprised when people mention it, and as a bonus get paid for it.

Anyway I know my audience, and I suspect Mastodon will be much more interested in how I got there than what I was doing when I did. Laughton Greenwood is about 15km from #Lewes station, and I did consider taking my bike on the train but I thought it would be a pain with all the basketry supplies I had to transport and in the end I'm glad I didn't because part of the journey was cancelled in the heat and I ended up having to get a coach. So I hired a Tern GSD from Get Bikery https://getbikery.org/, a CIC that hires out e- #cargobikes. It was £50 for the day which was a bit of a splurge but I decided to treat myself because I'd never tried a #cargobike before.

@afewbugs I have that bike! It’s so much fun to ride, my favourite cargo haul was a 6 foot Christmas tree. It is a heavy beast though.
Turbo mode is great, everything is so easy in turbo mode but it does make it harder to go back down to other modes.
It was really fun! The hardest adjustment I found wasn't the actual cycling it was maneuvering it when I wasn't riding it. It's longer than I'm used to and I did actually back it into someone reversing it to get through some bollards, and also significantly heavier. I'm used to just picking my bike up and moving it out of the way or turning it round, which you obviously can't do with an e-cargobike. It turns out I was also rather arrogantly overconfident in my ability to remember a route I hadn't cycled in six years, so quite a few 180 degree turns were necessary.
But the actual riding felt bizarrely effortless. It has four levels of battery assist: "eco" which I spent most of the time in, "tour" which I used for hills, "sport" which was utterly terrifying and "turbo" which I didn't dare try but I imagine probably involves flames coming out of the back wheel. I actually caught myself singing on the way up hills which was very weird.

Part of the route is along a Roman Road, and I thought it was rather cool to be riding (what is in my opinion) the pinnacle of modern transport technology along the route of the pinnacle of transport technology from two thousand years ago
I think 4 modes is standard. My bike is the same, though they’re called Low, Normal, High and Power.
I know what you mean though - when you’re not used to it the power kicks in abruptly and can accelerate you quickly from 2-7mph. Which doesn’t sound like much but on a tight corner … 😬
