Over the past few days, I’ve been implementing grouped photo views for cameras, lenses, and film stocks. Today, I deployed this feature to vernissage.photos. “Categories” in the top navigation has been replaced by “Explore,” where you can browse categories, cameras, lenses, and film stocks used to take the photos. This is one of those features you would be hard-pressed to find on other (non-photography-focused) Fediverse platforms. 🤩
@mczachurski hey, I used Pixelfed but I'm not completely convinced. How much space does one user get on the main vernissage instance and do people upload in full resolution normally? I would like to share photos but make them downloadable in full resolution, is vernissage a good fit for that?
@ChristianKrebel The main instance of Vernissage supports photos up to 10 MB (resolution doesn't matter). However, the recommended resolution is something similar to 4K (with the longer edge less than 4096px). This is for better compatibility with other services. Mastodon will not directly display larger images (users will see text and, instead of the image, a gray box with a link to the image), while Pixelfed will reject all images larger than 5000px (longer edge).
@mczachurski I'll probably need to revisit the Finnish translation. Suggestions as to what this should be called in Finnish are welcome. The category names will be in English only?
@kallekn Great 😊. Categories are stored in database and they can be changed by instance administrator. Maybe in the future I will add possibilities to translate them in database.

@mczachurski @blabberlicious interesting.....I tried to convince Dan to add similar functionality to pixelfed some time ago, without success (he was/is more interested in building an Instagram alternative than a serious photography platform, I suspect). I like this, it's looking like a nice blend of Flickr and Mastodon 👍
Does it use EXIF data to autopopulate the metadata?
@WiteWulf @mczachurski @blabberlicious pixelfed following hashtag button do not work, the api is incomplete, many of the features are not fully implemented or implemented only on web version. There is aton of important fixes and improvements need to be done then this nice to have features that only benefits the photographers and photography purists not general users

@WiteWulf I understand the sentiment, but not everyone is a developer or has the skills to submit a pull request. Feedback from regular users can still be valuable. 😉
