I appreciate the Mitch McConnell jokes, I do, but it appears that they’re trying to stretch this out until after an August 3rd deadline that would mean there wouldn’t be an election to fill his seat until after the midterms, which would be a pretty egregious subversion of democracy. And maybe we should be saying that a little louder.
@ben I don't appreciate the Mitch McConnell jokes. I don't think it is good to indulge in cruel jokes against our enemies, because it just cultivates cruelty in general. Now it's McConnell, soon it will be AOC, then it will be whoever the next Bukharin, Zinoviev & 700,000 others are next. Having a cruel attitude is a good way to end up shooting yourself in the foot & 700,000 comrades in the head the moment you get actual power. We must cultivate virtue & discipline in low stakes situations if we want to have it in high stakes situations.
I think it is being said quite a lot but one more time hurts no one! 🫡
@ben you mean the way McConnell himself kept a Supreme Court seat open for months to keep Obama from getting to pick one?
Saying it isn't enough. What path to force action exists? Who is best suited to engage it? What is the lead time to do so? I think we should get the folks at the various outlets (e.g., Indivisible, et al) on it. Coordinated call for unified effort to singular end -- unfuck this before the deadline and prove that no, actually, you are not "secure" in your power play. And you will never be so. So expect THAT. 🪔📣
"it appears"...
🤣
As if it's not blatantly obvious to any casual observer...
Cheating is their only strategy.
🤦♂️🤷♂️🤡🫏💩💩🖕🖕
@ben I had been assuming the assumed games here was about avoiding a preview special election before the midterms. Never even imagined it was about having another election after them.
Interesting.
@ben So my 'Weekend At Bernie's' reference is still a go? I mean, it's relevant with the whole shenanigan's / deception thing, right?
@ben I don’t follow. From a pure realpolitik standpoint, Dems should *want* the Senate seat that would normally command another GOP vote to be held by an absent/non-voting GOP senator. If MM is dead, the GOP should want to get the special under way because their odds of winning are good. And Beshear should drag his heels if there IS a death/resignation before Aug. 3 because the KY statute sets no deadline for Beshear to proclaim a special election.
@ben As an Australian I can only watch in real time democracy 🔥in the US while trying to make sure we don't end up with the same fate here with a clown called Pauline.
It's going to take more than a lot of loud voices to turn the ship around over there. Good luck, rooting for you.
@ben Agreed, but mockery may have the most leverage here.
@ben Lessens the R majority in the Senate; okay by me, but Kentuckians should be having a fit.
@ben I have no doubts about it
@ben
Silence as usual from the Centrist Democrats.
@ben I wondered about that but also there's almost zero chance it wouldn't be a republican replacement so it’s sortof a 1/2 pickup. Apparently Kentucky state Republicans removed the governor's ability to appoint a replacement in 2024.
@ben well? what hospital is he at? It's not like they're hard to sneak into.
