Fun fact. My son was legally a girl for two days when he was born.
My wife and I had been awake for > 24 hours when he was finally out. His birth was an emergency C-section, that went badly enough the consultant surgeon rushed into the room to help, not in scrubs. To say I was a mentally a mess afterwards is an understatement.
Mum and baby were OK in the end though, after both stayed in hospital for a week on antibiotics.
So during that, while they were stitching my wife back together one of the nurses hands me some paper work "Please check this is all correct"
Now keep in mind I am absolutely fucked at this point. Most of my memories from this hour are a jumbled mess even now.
I look at the paper work and it seems fine, his weight is correct, the date is today as far as I remember, great "yeah it looks good"
What I missed was the F in the gender column.
Bare in mind this form had just been filled in by a nurse who'd had to help me put on his first clothes about five minutes before this.
For two days no one noticed.
Until I took him down to the baby icu one night to get his antibiotics done and the doctor said "Ok, Please lift up her top"
Its 2 in the morning, I'm tired again, I'm thinking maybe I miss heard.
"erm, sure, he's a he though, have you got the right record?" I reply
"Huh? $CHILDS_NAME?"
"Yeah?"
"They are in the system as female"
"Huh?"
"Sorry, Can you take off his nappy, I need to double check this before I can give him the medicine, how did you get this wrong? You'd have been asked to check the form?"
"It was 20 hours of labour followed by an emergency c-section. would you notice a single character wrong in that state?"
"ouch, Ok, lets get this sorted"
And that's how my son went through a gender transition before me. :P
