@ZachWeinersmith Deep learning in general can be very useful. LLMs for writing software are pretty good at getting from "I only have a specification" to "I have the skeleton of an application that needs to be fleshed out by an engineer" and are unfortunately good at creating mountains of technical debt. LLMs as search engines can turn up useful references but the summaries cannot be trusted. LLMs as genies fulfilling wishes are a bad idea.
@ZachWeinersmith currently A2, expecting that to evolve into C3 in the distant future provided we can do something about tech bros, billionaires and rampant capitalism.
@ZachWeinersmith Surprisingly, I chose C3 based on the chosen titles. It's way overhyped tight now, but in the end it's corporations and people that suck.
@ZachWeinersmith
A1.2 if you're talking about LLMs
Which is basically what the vast majority of people are being sold as AI
@ZachWeinersmith A2-ish. Some AI works in some domains. The generative chatbot stuff is hard A1.
@ZachWeinersmith None of them. Mostly because I doubt that you are using a definition of “AI” that matches the one in use for nearly 70 years and I reject the “modern” redefinition.
If you had written “LLMs” instead of “AI” then your categories might have been relevant.
@ZachWeinersmith
Something around A1/A2/B1/B2
it kinda works in some domains, but often is more of a scam.
And I think it's extremely dangerous. Not because it may gain consciousness and decide to kill us (that's bullshit), but because it's used for things it's not safe to be used for, and also appears to impair cognitive damage.
This is the dumbest dystopia..
@ZachWeinersmith I find the GenAI LLMs to be an interesting new capability which the giant pools of money are way over investing in, in a typical 21st c "wrecking of otherwise good things via too much money" cf dot com, house lending, toys r us, etc. 30B spend on it seems reasonable. Borrowing enough money to put up a 30B data center in 10 percent of counties seems like a misapplication of scarce resources. 1/2
@ZachWeinersmith A2, with the qualifier that is probably say "for some kinds of tasks" rather than "in some domains." But maybe the definition of "domain" can cover that.
@ZachWeinersmith I think the main problem here is nomenclature: AI is a marketing term that confuses useful and well established things such as neutral networks with wasteful and ethically horrible things such as the so call genAI, aka the "robbery+exploration+pollution machine". GenAI is definitively A1, the rest... it depends.
@ZachWeinersmith Somewhere between A1 and A2, depending on what is meant by "AI".
@ZachWeinersmith For LLMs A1. The only thing they’re really good at is spam and they’re not even very good at that. As for coding, the supposed LLM silver bullet… A tool that is wrong 30-40% of the time in subtle ways that only an expert can discern is not a useful tool. I just hope the VCs run out of money before we lose an entire generation of engineering pipeline.
@ZachWeinersmith A2 leaning to A1, I can’t wait for the bubble to burst.
@ZachWeinersmith C2. AI is the more useful superset of LLMs. If it wasn't LLMs being leveraged by bunker billionaires it would be something else.
@ZachWeinersmith
The Tech: C3
The misanthropes running the businesses: A1
@ZachWeinersmith Am I the lonely C2?
@ZachWeinersmith A2, for sure.
Surprised you didn't use the poll feature?
@ZachWeinersmith A2 if I feel generous, but A1 would be my first reaction to "new" AI stuff and stay that way, unless proven wrong.
