Goals for 2026:
☐ DeGoogle
☐ DeMeta
☐ DeMicrosoft
Can you tick any off the list? 😎
@Tutanota I got rid of Microsoft for good about nine years ago and I haven’t looked back. Meta AI was what gave me the wake up call to get rid of Meta. Between all the creepy stuff I’ve seen online and my own creepy experience with it interfering with my WhatsApp messages, I got rid of WhatsApp last year and insta and Facebook this year. The hard thing for me is going to be de-googling. (1/2)
@Tutanota fully clean for 2 years in personal life, only have work Google and Microsoft accounts provided by employer. At least these are separated in work laptop (which at least run Linux) where I don't do personal things.
@Tutanota I only have deGoogle left. I'm too afraid to switch to LineageOS + microG as many apps may not work
@Tutanota for me degoogle is the hardest, I love google wallet 😊 The only thing that holds me back from full degoogleing :)
@Tutanota
No google, apple, meta, amazon...but microsoft they own github, minecraft...too much monopoly that users can not choose
Thanks Tuta team for your work :)
@Tutanota All of them - long ago. Including Youtube. Watches youtube videos via Freetube (and via NewPipe on my deGoogled Volla phone
@Tutanota Tick all three if I could.
@Tutanota Already ticked off all three, though I'll admit it wasn't until this year that I finally got rid of Google and Microsoft. (I got rid of Meta back in 2015 when they started screwing over everyone, trying to force people to give up their privacy willingly with IDs and etc. I can't believe people actually said yes to that! And then they started manipulating people and etc on purpose. I even less can believe people are ok with that... Why are they still there???)
It was kind of scary getting rid of Windows at first. I was surprised to learn how good Linux has gotten even for gaming though. It's harder, yes, but now my computer is MINE.
I do keep an old copy of Windows 10 with all the telemetry crap disabled in a VM with no Internet access, but almost never use it.
@Tutanota DeMeta wasn't that hard for me. DeMicrosoft took a while but I can officially say I use none of their products.
DeGoogling is still a WIP, I still use a stock android since there just isn't a good custom rom available for a Motorola razr. but besides the phone os and work I've gotten rid of all google stuff.
@Tutanota I’ve just changed to iOS and I don’t use their ecosystem or Google or Microsoft or Meta (with exception of WhatsApp). I’ve changed:
* Google Drive —> Koorf
* Microsoft Office and Google Documents —> Onlyoffice
* Google Maps —> Here Maps
* Google Search —> Startpage
* Keep and Onenote —> Standart Notes
* Gmail —> Protonmail
* Google Calendar —> Proton Calendar
* Brave —> Vivaldi
And all of them for free (and almost all from Europe).
For iOS and MacOS. And sometimes in Linux Mint
@Tutanota if Android with MicroG counts as DeGoogled and I can get a pass on work devices (whichvI don't own) then I can tick all since a few weeks ago 😀
@Tutanota DeGoogle is very hard due to their control/influence of the Android ecosystem. Even with #GrapheneOS, to much of the apps and dependencies rely on Google. You would go Apple instad, but that would hardly be any win in my mind. But every single step is a step forward.
Also GitHub being Microsoft, so that's also that. I don't think i'll cancel that account.
@Tutanota All of the above. I'm doing fantastic.
@Tutanota We use MS at work so that one will take some time, even though I pester IT for Linux at every opportunity 😂 as for the other two, I haven't deleted my accounts but they are, at this point, entirely dormant & will most likely be dying for good this year & all Google products have been replaced 👍
Degoogle: almost, next phone will be Fairphone with /e/os
Demeta: quitted whatsapp years ago, check
Demicrosoft: on Linux now, only have to leave their authenticator. Left hotmail and use Tuta for many years.
Already done ✅
@Tutanota All Gone, including Apple, which I used to really respect.
Done. Done. And done.
The only tie I still have to Google is the integrated map on my Hyundai Kona infotainment system, and I can't disable it or install an alternative.
Anyone know how to root an infotainment system?
@IT_SME Well done! Hmh, tech in cars is a difficult one..
@Tutanota Only DeBezos left for me.
And this is a tough one.
@Tutanota Linux: De-M$ for 20+ years. Couldn't afford to upgrade hardware with every OS update. Most of my computers/laptops are over 10 years old, and many of them were free, from friends.
Am the admin for an organization's FB page, otherwise, I don't use it.
I'm still on Android, but most of the apps I use are from F-droid. I would like to use a phone with an open source OS, but only if it can be run on an under-$250 phone, and on my current carrier.
@Tutanota probably not, but definitely reducing/limiting
@Tutanota I cant and I wont be able to
@Tutanota Does playing Minecraft count as using Microsoft? Else I would have already no Google, no Meta and no Microsoft since even years
@Tutanota Working on #1, #2 Whatsapp is unavoidable in Germany
>:( and #3 almost complete :-)
@Tutanota I'm on my way. Only youtube and GitHub remains
@Tutanota For music production, de-microsoft ist unfortunately still rather difficult. Most commercial providers of high quality virtual instruments are still not interested in supporting formats that work in Linux.
