@inquiline averages hide so much complexity. By this accounting, San Francisco is more affordable than any of those or New York or Paris, but our income distribution is so bimodal. On the other hand, being a long-term renter isn't so bad if you have rent control: i.e., stability and predictable payments, which make up much of the motivation to get a mortgage at all.
