For years, I watched without understanding why my wife's iPad could sit in standby for weeks and still hold a charge, while mine would drain in two days without even being used. This went on for years - both are 2020 models and lightly used.

A week ago, by chance, I stumbled upon a post from someone mentioning that keeping the Pencil and Magic Keyboard attached, even when not in use, kills the battery in just a few days. I had never made the connection. Over a week ago, I disconnected everything and put the iPad in standby, connected to Wi-Fi, with 78% battery. I just turned it on: 54%.I can only think about how much I’ve needlessly ruined the battery over these six years out of ignorance (or was it inefficiency?).

@stefano it was device inefficiency

@stefano I’ve sold by iPad Air to my sister several years ago, but I was also appalled by the standby time and I also would store it with the pencil slapped on the side of the device.

I’m confused as to why a company that basically sells thoughtfulness (the branding of having considered every little detail in the design process) would have let that go out the door? It sounds like a bug, when we describe the behavior!

@stefano @spaceraser or at least identify the issue by saying store the pen separately?

@spaceraser yes, I think it’s a sort of but, too.

@stefano
Power consumptions of wireless devices (WiFi and/or Bluetooth, but not limited with them) strongly depends on the radio intensity of the carrer it attempts to connect with.
The lower, the device would try to amplify the radio wave from the access point / paired devices internally (and emit stronger radio waves to the access point / paired devices), the higher, it doesn't need to.

@stefano my recently purchased Kobo Sage has, I think, a similar issue. The "sleep cover" is supposed to automatically put the ereader to sleep when closed, but once in a while depletes the battery. It really seems like those "magic" attachments with magnets are not that great!

@rfnix maybe those consume some battery just to know they’re closed.
In my case, it works but with the normal magnetic case. The Magic Keyboard and/or pen deplete it.

@stefano It's not a bug, it's a feature 😃
