Vibes.

I’m a software developer. My job will be gone in a year/a few months/a couple of weeks.

The Jobs Crisis My job, as I have known it for the past twenty-five years, is no more. As someone who's only ever worked at small companies [1] or on my own, I probably had to do much more than software developers at large corporate places. Most of my work

@rahoulb The future of handcrafted code is bright. Needless to say, I completely disagree with your assertion. I think you're ignoring about a bazillion externalities and the dangers of our wildly-unsustainable Big Tech bubble, as well as how culture works. (Handwriting code will exist for as long as people enjoy handwriting code, which is still a very large cohort indeed.)

@jaredwhite There will always be demand for hand-crafted code. But nowhere near as much demand as today, because the models, when handled correctly by someone who knows what they are doing (very big caveats) make dev work cheaper, faster and more reliable. Plus I actually find it fun (in a different way to writing code).

I've seen your thoughts on AI and I broadly agree - but to me it comes down to "who owns and profits from this?" (and I hate the people that do right now)

@rahoulb Citation very much needed on "more reliable" 😄

But yeah, you raise a good question with regard to ownership. Models don't simply exist as singular artifacts…they are based *on* something. Whose work are they based on? Whose work is being appropriated when they are used?

@jaredwhite Not totally reliable today - but the pace of improvement is so high I think they will be in a year.

They write better tests, with more edge case coverage than I do, they write more complete end-to-end tests too (whereas I get bored). They have pointed out areas where I did inappropriate authorisation checks. They have found security issues with my CI and Ansible playbooks.

They don't stop beginner mistakes by vibe coders. But they make me much better than I would be alone.
