If you wanted to mandate a piece for safety equipment to reduce injury for cyclists, it would be gloves. Most cycling accidents result in hands hitting the ground first, gloves protect the skin of the palms.

But legally requiring cycling gloves would be bonkers.

Just like helmets.

@quixoticgeek For me it would be lights. I am always amazed at the number of people riding around, unaware or unconcerned that they are basically invisible to drivers.
I have lights fore and aft on all my bikes, and reflective stickers or sidewalls on the ones I use around traffic (i.e. not the MTB).

@riotnrrd those are already a legal requirement. Just poorly enforced
