When the war in Ukraine broke out, and Europe was hesitant in the first year, I thought alright, this is a surprise to everyone and of course we need time to prepare.

Now 4 years have passed, and we are 450 million EU and 69 million UK citizens still standing on the sidelines, telling 38 million Ukrainians they should fight 133 million Russians on their own.

We could end this war. Instead we keep pretending that it is fine to let Ukraine take all the punches.

I find that profoundly shameful.

@randahl I made this nearly 4 years ago ...

3 Screenshots from the movie Monty Python's Life of Brian: the first one shows Brian tied to the cross for crucifixion, with an Ukrainian flag added to his chest, looking down relieved with the text "My friends, you've come!" added above his head. The second picture shows about 6 people (Brian's friends in the movie) looking up at him, clapping their hands, with the text "USA and Europe". The third image shows Brian, still on the cross, now with a painful expression on his face (in the movie this is the moment when he realizes his friends won't take him down but celebrate his sacrifice instead).

However, Russia has literally been meddling in politics in nearly every western democracy (or reasonable facsimile of democracy), so they cast the first stones.

@randahl I support the sentiment, but can we please avoid statements like "war in Ukraine broke out." This makes it sound like war is a thing that just happens, like spontaneous combustion.

""When Russia illegally invaded Ukraine's sovereign territory..." accurately describes what happened.

But I came to the conclusion, that we, the EU, don't necessarily want Ukraine to win, but want them to grind down Russia's armed forces, so we are safe for a couple more extra years.
Suddenly it makes sense...
But maybe just my conclusion.

"Willing countries" of #NATO need to be doing two things right now:

1) putting troops at Ukrainian energy site as human shields against Russian attacks

2) putting air power in Ukraine and directly providing air defence for the country away from the front lines.

Both are totally defensive measures that protect civilians, defend against war crimes and help Ukraine focus on fighting back.

@randahl Europe could bring Russia to its knees without firing a shot:

1️⃣ Total economic isolation — real sanctions, no loopholes
2️⃣ Seize frozen Russian assets and give them to Ukraine
3️⃣ Full diplomatic and institutional isolation

Europe doesn’t lack power. It lacks political will.

At least the demand of weapons should've been answered appropriately at the very start.
EU always proclaims being a union of countries, not only for the economy. A "misconception", rather say propaganda, if you ask me.
Now that the USA is lost as the "big Brother" taking the lead (conveniently) the truth is revealed.
Worse than that nowadays the states are rather a helper for russia - mind even with bases inside the EU.
*Nobody* wants a war *at home*. So does Ukraine.

@randahl maybe because you are old enough to not go to the frontline. What about the young population? Are you ready to kill hundreds of thousands of us?

Another reason is not going to war to defend a continent that sucks up to trump, and still trades with Russia through other countries. Hypocrisy.

Maybe you can say that anyway they will strike us. A situation VERY different than escalating the war by having 20 something countries declaring war at russia. 1/2

The war industry profits more than in peacetime. The Ukrainians are pawns, small change, an easy investment.

And it starts when Joe Public invests a few bucks of his bitcoins in Heckler & Koch, Colt, FN Herstal, Kalashnikov, Sig Sauer, General Dynamics, Rheinmetall, BAE Systems, Nexter Systems, MBDA, Raytheon, Lockheed Martin, Rafael, Boeing, et. al. Investors and manufacturers have an interest in continuing the war. Anything for a little cream in your coffee before you retire...

Now you want the European citizenship to support a war created by some criminals in our name by giving the power in Ukraine to their worst nationalistic fascists? No, I don't think so.

@randahl The problem is that other nations' leaders either believed Putin's threats about escalation "if NATO joined", and/or they feared internal political detriment if their nation's soldiers were killed.

We don't have leaders, we have politicians.

Although it probably would have only taken one other nation to commit troops for all others to quickly go "oh, yes, we will too" - but since no one did take that step.
