Mark MacLachlan

Mark MacLachlan is a professor of chemistry and the dean of science at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.

For his research he creates new iridescent materials that mimic the structures of beetle shells - and can be used for sensing and coloration. He's been a crossword fan since his days as a postdoctoral student at M.I.T. This is his fifth construction for The Times. - W.S.
