Actually the purpose of the first thing you and I would rightly define as the "internet" was tracking racial groups and rebel factions for US intelligence/the military in South East Asia. So technically, this is what the internet was born for - or rather, this is why the Pentagon poured money into the technology you would eventually come to call "the internet."

@AnarchoNinaWrites DARPAnet was about maintaining the ability to prosecute war after the entire civilian population had been immolated in nuclear fire. But yes. And, I have huge anxieties about this being the actual purpose of AI. On the one hand you have a bullshit generator, that everyone knows is a bullshit generator, and is loudly saying is a bullshit generator. On the other hand, you have megacorps whose hidden primary income source has always been selling surveillance and information control to the government. And you have a history of targeted programs of state lies. This is why I think cryptographically and forensically bulletproof archiving is the single most urgent need right now. Because at some point, some idiot is going to flip the switch on this, because it is "only" about fucking over the marginal and insignificant, and therefore could not have broader implications important to avoid, and the entire digital period of history is going to disappear.
