While I accept that realpolitik has always been at the forefront of geopolitical decision making and the illusion that it was in the background in WEIRD countries these last 80 years is now disintegrating, it is astonishing just how energy and resource blind this longish article is.

Sure, people are more attentive to security than they are to asset stripping the Earth, but the latter is not nothing. And yet to read Robert Kagan you would think it is

…It is obtuse to imply that Europe’s introspection can be fundamentally the same as pre 1945, or to imply as Kagan does that the reason for the disintegration of European empires was just some pragmatic choosing USA prosperity and nothing to do with who had oil and who, relatively speaking, didn’t.

And it is even more obtuse not to even mention that while all of what is to come plays out, the biosphere itself is destabilised.

But hey, that’s neoconservatives. Obtuse af
