News: The Independent | US warns they will send fighter jets into Canadian airspace if F-35 deal doesn’t go through

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-canada-airspace-fighter-jets-b2907807.html

Hoekstra warned that if Canada chooses to purchase Saab’s Gripen E jets, the U.S. would still need to reconsider how it works with it’s northern neighbor on security.

@mastodonmigration Sweden, a new NATO member, is integrating, supplying and building arms in North Atlantic allie countries. Not shocking since they have been told to spend more. With today’s technology NATO will be able to integrate air defense even if the US implodes on itself. On the economic side the abundant Canadian and Nordic oil, minerals and in particular low nordic debt and high sovereign wealth (they sure know how make real money) can supply NATO needs. (1/2)

@mastodonmigration ah Pete Hoekstra busy fearmongering as always. He was our former US ambassador in the Netherlands and he did some rabid claims like politicians were burnt here. Hoekstra also attended a gathering of far right fringe party Forum for Democracy which was seen as interference in Dutch politics due to given FVD agency because of his presence

@mastodonmigration An "inferior product" ... well, that remains to be seen. Apart from the question on whether the F-35 is superior, what would a sovereign country prefer? A jet that it produced in their own country with a reliable supply chain on replacement and maintenance parts or a U.S. jet, where the question on whether it has a killswitch is still not off the table and where it's maintenance heavily depends on the political stability of a regime run by utter snowflakes?

@mastodonmigration this could be the first crack in NORAD... if Canada goes with Gripen, and Trump has a fit, NORAD might be done... and if that happens there will be *NOT* be US fighters entering Canadian airspace. Period.

This is the crumbling of a 60 year alliance.

Nothing lasts forever…

@chris

Here is a really interesting, fairly recent, Gripen vs. F-35 article, for those who relish this stuff...

Nordic Defence Sector

Gripen E vs F-35? The Wrong Question to Ask

Mikael Grev is a former Gripen pilot and co-founder and CEO of Avioniq. In this column for Nordic Defence Sector, he compares the Gripen E and the F-35, arguing for a more nuanced view of fighter capabilities, procurement choices, and the strategic benefits of operating a mixed fleet.
