If we ever escape from the hell we're in, then one of the things we need to demand from our elected leaders is for the U.S. to become signatory to, and bound by, the International Criminal Court.
It would be reasonable for Europe to never trust us again, but this is a step we can take to regain some trust, and it would deter future U.S. government officials from flouting international law.
It is plainer than ever that the U.S. never deserved to be exceptional.

For those who are unaware: the U.S. government refuses to recognize the authority of the #ICC or the validity of any indictments handed down there against U.S. Citizens. Ref: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_and_the_International_Criminal_Court. All the excuses U.S. elected leaders have given over the years for why the U.S. shouldn't join the ICC are bullshit. They all boil down to, "We're above the law," and fuck that noise.
