I get the DDR4 and DDR5 RAM "shortage", but who the fuck is buying up:

* Low end NVMe drives (Gen3/4 <= 1TB)

* DDR4 and DDR5 *SODIMMs*

Who is benefiting?

@voltagex it’s because OpenAI have bought reserves of WAFERS - the raw material that gets turned into RAM and flash ICs

@jpm yeah I get the reserve capacity thing. That doesn't magically make 2666mhz DDR4 SODIMMs useful*

@voltagex they also bought reserves of the ICs as well. Same chips go on DIMMs and SODIMMs.

@voltagex same with flash ICs - the NAND flash chips are approximately the same (in various grades, same as DRAM) no matter which SSD controller they’re attached to.

@jpm yes but they're not repurposing those NAND from existing products are they? So this is "just" supply and demand?

@voltagex yep, pretty much. The scale of the induced demand is what’s fucking everything over.
