I just finished reading @pluralistic Cory Doctorow's book Enshittification: Why everything suddenly got worse and what to do about it. It is definitely worth a read - it explained a lot I was struggling to understand about the economics behind the things that went wrong with platforms like Twitter and Amazon. #EnShittification #Reading

Really enjoyed this, especially the point about platforms becoming monopolies on both sides: they dominate users, but also squeeze suppliers by becoming unavoidable marketplaces.

I loved the insight that the goal isn’t “regulate platforms into behaving”, but to make it easier to leave them without losing the social capital and networks we’ve built up over years. Portability and exit options are what give users real leverage when platforms start getting worse.

One thing in the UK that comms regulator brought in that has made a positive impact is the ability to switch your mobile phone supplier and take your number by use of a PAC (code). You can get this number by text no matter which network you are on. You then give this code to your new supplier and they switch you and your number within 24 hours. This also cancels the contract with the previous supplier (exit fees still apply if you leave early).

There is also a STAC code which works in the same way but does not take your old number. So you can switch and use the new number from your new supplier.
