@corpsmoderne I use Jekyll and love it. It has a lot of templates focused on photography: some simple, some quite feature-rich.
@corpsmoderne I had tried many so far: gallerpy, sigal, even nikola's gallery support. Most have the issues that the JS code implementing the UX, what you can find called "lightbox" or some other things I forget.
What I currently use is https://files.gallery/ it's not static, it's PHP, but it works right out of the box and it's easy to update: it's a single source code file. And it has a very important feature to me: each photo get its on URL.

(trying to find excuses to not code my own and probably never publish it 😅)
@corpsmoderne i've heard something like that generates a website from a picture folder but can't remember the name sorry :(
@corpsmoderne I'm using sigal, it's okay.
@corpsmoderne I've been planning to look at immich for some time now. Looks to be a good basis for a photography website, but I do not have any hands-on experience yet. FWTW.
@fedops looks like a nice project but l'm really looking for a fully or mostly static solution, in any case I'd really prefer to not have to maintain a sql database.
@corpsmoderne Is this your first site or have you tried stuff before?
@iredave I have a vps and I've self hosted my mails and websites for decades. Currently hosting a couple of static websites. Had a sql backed photography website a long time ago, and would like to avoid the complexity now.
