from that Axios article I just boosted:

Flashback: The 1992 Ruby Ridge standoff raised the same legal knot now dogging the ICE agent shooting.

In 1997, an Idaho prosecutor charged FBI sniper Lon Horiuchi for manslaughter after he fatally shot an unarmed woman during the standoff.

The case was fought in court for years over the question of federal immunity, but was later dropped by another Idaho prosecutor.

it turns out that the federal government cannot in fact just do whatever the fuck it wants, considerable power is devolved to the states under the US Constitution.

this is why I’m not on board with lefties (typically half my now somewhat advanced age) who want to treat the Constitution like a Chesterton Fence because it was written by dead white men. it turns out those dead white men did a LOT of thinking about how exactly to set shit up after having a bunch of cop murders perpetrated on them by the English crown.
