"Follow[ing] several serious, high-profile data breaches that undermined public trust in government, some of which also placed lives at risk", the UK's independent data protection regulator, the Information Commissioner's Office, is taking enforcement action against the UK government.

Only kidding.

It has signed a Memorandum of Understanding, which imposes no legal obligations.

The ICO and His Majesty’s Government have today (8 January) signed an important Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) which sets out government’s commitment to raise data protection standards.

@neil A naïve question: Does the ICO have the authority to take action against HMG?

@daniel Probably individual secretaries of state, rather than "the government".

@neil Well, the UK ICO has always been weak, and has become even weaker, raising no concerns about the merging and sharing of different data sources that were originally supposed to have been kept separate.

@neil
Clearly the ICO need to learn the definition of “accountability” because I don’t think they know what it actually means. Maybe someone should send a copy of the Oxford English Dictionary for their reference

@neil clearly someone needs to teach the ICO what “accountability”means cause I don’t think the ICO knows what it means. Bring a copy of the Oxford English Dictionary with them
