When Paris was paved with wooden cobblestones.

Passage Saint‑Maur still has a few of those wooden blocks left, some of the last in the city.

In the 1800s Paris used wood because it made the streets quieter, and it was cheaper to replace.

But most were removed because they rotted or became slippery, which is why the surviving ones in Passage Saint‑Maur are so rare.

@globalmuseum

Before noise reducing asphalt, there was noise reducing cubblestones. Like it.

German word would be "Schallschutzpflaster".

@globalmuseum I believe some tram lines were laid with wooden rails outside hospitals to keep the noise down

@globalmuseum Some years ago, wooden cobblestones were discovered in Mannheim during road work in the city center in the street in front of a former clinic. It seems that wood was used there to get the street quieter, everywhere else normal stones were used.
Nearly all old cobblestone streets were simply paved over with asphalt decades ago to make them more car-friendly, preserving the old surface (in a way).

@globalmuseum that's 200m from where I live. If you have the chance, you should try to see an exhibition there. It is also paved with wood and it's a very nice building. It's very close.

@globalmuseum I think I saw some of these when I went to Paris with my parents as a teen.

Worked at a metro Detroit tool& die shop that still had a floor inside their press building made of wood like that. No rot bc it was soaked in machine oil.
